Trafficked Girls Estimate

Before launching A Future. Not A Past. in 2007, we realized that in order to convince lawmakers and community leaders that child sex trafficking was real, we needed an independent research firm to quantify the problem.

For over three years, researchers tracked the estimated statewide incidence of CSEC victims on a quarterly basis. The statewide estimates ranged from an initial level of around 200 adolescent girls per month, to nearly 500 within the next couple of years. The data showed clearly that CSEC street activity, hotel activity, and escort service activity were holding steady or trending downward during that time, yet there was a meteoric rise in the incidence of CSEC victims on online classifieds websites.

Many advocates were fond of saying the number of CSEC victims in Georgia was “in the thousands,” but we chose instead to rely on a conservative, replicable, and empirically-based estimate procedure that was significantly lower. The results were increased credibility with policymakers, which translated into better outcomes for our youth.
